In the spirit of Halloween, we have decided to host our first MixelPix contest for our MixelPix friends. There are going to be some crazy costumes on some really crazy people tomorrow. Send us the scariest, the dumbest, sexiest, and ohh the weirdest costume you can find. The rules are simple:

1. Upload pictures of costumes to Mixelpix with the tag @HLW.
Note: the tag should be in the subject line for emails and body for MMS. Also, the costumes should have people in them.
2. Vote for you favorite pictures at www.mixelpix.com/Halloween.
3. The picture with the most votes wins!

What about the prizes? Well, what’s a contest without prizes? Ok, here is what I got:
MixelPix Haloween Prizes

Your choice of prizes (from left to right):
half bottle of Sealtest Reduced Fat Milk, an Apple Shuffle, or a 128Mb Flash drive.
The contest ends at 1am (Nov 1st)

Some disclaimers:

If you are the winner then we will give you a call on your cell. Note, you should probably register with your correct cell number. Oh and we reserve the right to disqualify invalid votes (or creating fake accounts to vote).

Month 1

October 3rd, 2007

Ok, we are past the first month and so far we have learned that:

1. our users love to alter other pix and respond in chains
2. we are now host to picture battles (think ninja vs pirates)
3. for some reason user:ob1ne is resistant to the force
4. guys love pictures of fish (with girls in them)
5. girls love to post pictures, but not with the guy’s pictures
6. if you are going to post pictures then remember your wife/girlfriend might also be using the site.

Also, if you haven’t noticed the home page now has pagination. Yes!!! you can navigate back through the images you have missed.

UCF inaugural game captured on MixelPix!

September 20th, 2007

UCF’s inaugural game at Bright House Stadium captured on MixelPix!

One of the more intriguing things to me about a site like MixelPix is the simultaneous live broadcasting of events from an individual and personal level. In essence, groups of users are recording and documenting history, real time, from multiple sources and the insight it can provide about historical events is very fascinating.

StadiumWhile not exactly as news worthy as the fall of the Berlin Wall or to be more current, the OJ Simpson arrest, this weekend saw the opening of the brand new Bright House Stadium as UCF hosted the #6 ranked Texas Longhorns here in Orlando. We had quite a few MixelPix users in attendance capturing the event.

HotDogCross campus tailgating was in full effect with the inevitable hotdog eating, beer drinking, and constant taunting of Texas fans. Most tailgaters arrived early for the 3:30 game braving the heat and enjoying some of America’s finest cuisine.

GrillThe entire day was amazing. Nothing beats the energy of gathered crowds on campus for a Saturday college football game. Temperatures were in the 95+ degrees and everyone tried to stay hydrated.

DanThe fan enthusiasm was contagious (Speedo Dan was my personal favorite). The pre-game festivities fed the enthusiastic afternoon crowd which almost saw one of the biggest upsets in college football as UCF came close to knocking off the Longhorns losing only by a field goal.

BeveragesThanks to users chaologist and robmonkey for some of the pictures and captions they provided for the game. I look forward to watching more history told as your story on the pages of MixelPix.

The Widget Battle

September 7th, 2007

I almost forgot to tell you about the Widget battle. Well, as a part of this launch I challenged the developers to build a better widget for MixelPix (than I). Of course, one of the developers accepted my challenge. And now I am in the middle of a widget-buildoff.

Let the games begin. Here are the rules:
1. It must be a fully functional (working, doesn’t crash) widget.
2. It must be able to install via the Facebook Application directory.
3. It must be able to be installed outside of Facebook as well.
4. It can only use the RSS feeds provided by MixelPix.com

The winner is selected based on the total number of users (Facebook or standalone).

It’s alive

September 7th, 2007

Ok, now I can say that the beta of MixelPix.com is officially up!

I would not recommend a Friday launch for production apps. However, if you are planning a launch party then you should probably launch the app and then drink. I do not recommend the reverse. We are really excited about the launch of this app and hope you enjoy the craziness that is about to begin.

MixelPix?

September 4th, 2007

Well, I don’t have a business plan or an idea of how to make money with MixelPix, but it is fun (and the IT guys love it)! It is a great way to share experiences with the world or just your friends.

Later this week, we will do another blog posts with some helpful tips on how to use the app and announcements on upcoming features. Oh, and I will tell you about the internal widget battle we are having on facebook (developers are getting pwned).
